George Washington never had to put up with a stop sign or a traffic light.

Of course, the base line reason that our modern world requires regulations is because when human beings are routinely in possession of deadly force -- deadly force which on an instant can, and does, go awry -- deadly force which on the highways annually kills more Americans than the death toll of most wars -- then for some inexplicable reason Democracy wants to regulate.

No one suggests that a Revolutionary War style black powder rifle be put behind a lock because we fear that a child may load it, raise it, and accidentally kill a friend.

I don't know where regulation will end. I know that most Americans are so wicked, so evil, and so stupid that they are willing to trade-in their rights (4th Amendment), the health of the planet, and their good sense of what is reasonable behavior for a two footed animal, in exchange for a week in the tropics -- and let not the tropical natives follow them home.

The Amish don't have lifestyles that require a great deal of regulation. I understand that in the American West there are plenty of wild horses needing homes, instead of slaughter. We all know that the Conservatives love to embrace The Cowboy, The Hero, and Deregulation but can never seem to stop all their hugging of men in uniforms long enough to get off their lazy stereotype-seeking intellect and actually do something to make life -- their country -- better.

UNIONISM, SOCIALISM, COMMUNISM, AND MODERN LIBERALISM GENERALLY
"The family and I were just enjoying our lives. I guess we weren't looking . . . maybe made the wrong choices, the wrong turns. Some say we were tricked. Don't know. Now here we are with so little and it seems that those other people have so much. If this distribution of wealth continues we fear that we could become slaves or near slaves. So the neighbors and I got together and we think it would work out for the best if we started over and we redistributed. Yes. A New Deal. A Great Society of Neighbors, Friends, Family, Brothers and Sisters. Relax, Rich Neighbors -- Easy Living for All. We'll all get back to enjoying our lives."

A LITTLE HISTORY FROM ANCIENT ROME
Spartacus was a Roman gladiatorial slave who, a few decades before the time of Christ, escaped a gladiatorial school with about 70 other slaves and a wagon load of gladiatorial arms. He and his comrades eventually liberated numerous other Roman slaves becoming a rather large army of rebellion. Circumstances were such (the Roman army was off fighting foreign wars) that Spartacus had great success up and down the Italian "boot". Eventually, however, Spartacus was defeated. The survivors of his army, numbering around six thousand, were crucified one after another the length most of the Appian Way between between Naples and Rome. You might consider Spartacus and his friends the next time you see a crucifix.

A LITTLE RUSSIAN HISTORY
In the 1770's a Russian peasant named Pugachev lead a rebellion through impersonation of the dead Emperor Peter III. Peter was unpopular among the Aristocry and had been recently overthrown and killed, possibly by his wife Catherine II. It was Pugachev's plan to take advantage of Peter's identity, claim that the Emperor had survived, and lead a revolt of Cossacks and peasants to overthrow the Russian establishment. "Pugachev's Rebellion" enjoyed some success but was eventually defeated. Pugachev was publicly beheaded and then what remained of him was drawn and quartered.

After the Rebellion government reforms related to peasants were halted. It's believed that Catherine had had pre-Rebellion plans to emancipate the peasantry, which were primarily migrant at that time. However, the Russian aristocracy had become so fearful of a peasantry roving the land that, from the Rebellion forward, the peasants were forced to abandon their migrations and to remain serfs on the land of particular Aristocratic owners.

Two further points: First, Pugachev's Rebellion predated Karl Marx so calling it "communist" is a bit premature although that's exactly what Pugachev's Rebellion would be called today. Second, if you were born in Russian prior to 1917, the chances are overwhelming that you would be a peasant. And if, in 1917, you were a peasant and not a Communist how could you be anything but a fool?

ATHLETES OF AMERICA; ATHLETES OF THE WORLD; ATHLETES OF THE UNIVERSE
Given that I am the equivalent of a Blue Whale walking the earth -- big, HUGE, muscular, skilled in all I do and living in a world being polluted by knuckle heads . . . I challenge anyone and everyone to gather up the pick and shovel see if they able to dig a deeper, wider, longer, faster foundation trench than I can do. I am the greatest foundation trench digger that ever was. The world championships are being held everyday in Haiti. If I don't get there, don't hesitate to start digging those foundation trenches without me. If you need to practice, start right there at home by digging a new trench to replace that piece of outmoded, polluting American crap you call a house that you're living in now.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; But over the centuries, sedimentation from mistreatment of the topsoil inland gradually filled in the inlet around the city. The coastlines moved seaward and the ruins of Ephesus are now some 5 miles inland from the coast.

Each time funding goes to the Interstate Highway System there is an unspoken presumption that all future generations will continue maintaining this infrastructure; indeed, they must, or there will be consequences related to the value of all the real estate that most depends on these roads -- especially the real estate nearest the exits. Let the smallest under or over pass fall and there will be a lot of detouring for hundreds of miles around. How does one calculate the eternal expenses of the Interstate Highway into the calculations of the National Debt? Those who embrace the flames of coal and oil never seem to consider eternity.

In some parts of the world we are often reminded of the loss of habitat for animals near extinction: the Tiger, Orangutan, Panda, Polar Bear etc. Despite being almost exclusively a bicyclist for several years now, and despite being
a person who views the challenge of any "tool" as a skill to be mastered, I don't feel that I'm an expert at The Bicycle.
Is it me? Or is it the simply simple complications of this machine of Miraculous Physical Forward Motion With Minimal Friction? This much I can tell you -- anyone who believes that the bicycle should be more widely used by humanity must accept that the machine must be more easily used by humanity. The general use of the bicylce must not be viewed as the practice of an art form. The bicylce must compete with the practical convenience, if not the comfort, of the automobile. I have no material fabrication facilities and I may not be an inventor but I believe I know what are tne current necessities of The Consumer Friendly Bike:

1. The seat of a bicycle should be easily, and without additional tools, be able to angle-wratchet forward and back to allow for periodic relief and alternation of pressure points in the crotch. When one considers the ease and variety in the adjustment of automobile seats, the idea of getting out wrenches and fussing over fractional bike seat adjustments seems absurd.

2. The front fork of the bicycle should be easily, in one step, preferably with one finger, be easily locked into a forward position to facilitate the ease of leaning and parking. It is the wobbily uncertain positioning of the front fork which most usually makes bikes so prone to tipping when parking. It only takes a few failed attempts at parking before a potential bike enthusiast, who may not have a great intereest in mastering the physical forces of stationary balance, becomes frustrated and hopeless and a reluctant bicycle user.

3. I'm not an electrical engineer, but I know that electrical generators, like the wheels of a bicycle, spin on a virtually friction free axis. Why these two spinning items haven't been paired together over the past century is beyond me. Electrical generation should be standard and integrated into the design on most, if not all, street bikes, at a minimum for lighting, and with accessory chargers for batteries.

If bicycle design can't make some effort, some gesture, to reasonable comfort I just don't see how the bicycle can -- and it doesn't -- and it must -- possibly compete with the luxury of the automobile.

But WAIT! There'll Be MORE!!!
An essay on defeating the Nationalist Mind!
Who knows what else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
How could an architect be anything but contrary to The American Way of Life? Hmmmmmmm . . . Meanwhile, I also know from experience that most American college grads would not be able to define the term "berm" or express an understanding of the basic principles of "home geothermal design".

The energy saving architectural designs in these drawings have been almost entirely ignored by New England developers, contractors, and architects -- you know --the alleged "the job makers". Take note that the illustrated style of Architecture is rather "Space Age" in appearance while the typical "McMansion" has that Grandmotherly appeal of which the American Man is so fond.

The Capitalist argument says that the pursuit of self-interest will drive an efficient economy and yet this architectural/energy problem is just one glaring example of how Capitalism only serves itself. In the instance of Architecture, Capitalism has never served that old "Yankee" value of THRIFT. But Capitalism is always, dependably, in service to consumption. Capitalist consumption profits that which leads to more Capitalist consumption. THRIFT -- the creative use of limited resources to get the most out of them -- is never to be rewarded and preferably shunned.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; In the past ten years, whenever I've visited a big box hardware store, I've made it a point to stop at the book section to see what is currently being offered to support or encourage solar/geothermal home design -- NOTHING. I haven't even been able to find a book on simple greenhouse additions. But there were plenty of books on Gazebos (now, there's a brilliant Capitalist investment) and swimming pools.

In 1979 I was just entering Homelessness. In the five years previous I had made an independent hobby/study/lifestyle (artist poverty) of THRIFT which included energy conservation, materials recycling and organic home gardening.

In those same years I was an advocate of Individualistic Libertarianism. That was the post-Nixon era and I believed in the "Two Party" cliche so I registered as a Republican -- it seemed so outrageously avante garde at the time. What a mistake.

Let me bear witness as an artist here: Despite having made some limited, but theoretically conservative, national press attention at the time, never has a Republican, a Libertarian, or Conservative ever sought me out to engage in that "sacred practice" called TRADE. I could probably count my lifetime paying customers on my fingers and toes and still afford an amputation or two. (Ah, Van Gogh)

My career, as well as the "career" of energy saving architectural design can only conclude that Capitalism, conservatism -- in fact modern day Americanism -- [is for dummies] has no affinity for independent creative expression which is advocating creative solutions. "The Greatest Country in the World" cultivates controllable, standard thinking, employees who, it is preferred, will always be -- and always want to be -- institutionalized.

P.S. A version of Architectural Berming, known as "The Dugout" was the prefered architectural style of first generation of American Prairie Pioneers.

January 13, 2010

Random Notes:
Looks like I'll be leaving the Pinkham Buildiing Studios in soon.

Commentary after the Blizzard: As a person who believes it is my duty to experience the inclement weather, I just wanted to comment on the American Totalitarianism (men with snowplows and political authority) that dominates the byways of this country when it snows . . . for the sake of the National Oil Addiction. Let me know when I fail to give you anything but an original perspective. They don't call me "Nonunanamous" for nothin'

January 6, 2011

This blog, and all my (numerous) blogs are maintained and updated on a sporadic schedule. I always try to make them interesting. My blogging is evolving.
